Misconceptions in Treating Problematic Muscle Groups: A Real Case with the Shoulder

I won’t beat around the bush, let me tell you about a real situation that some clients face when working with certain experts who focus on the wrong things when dealing with problem muscle groups. Let’s take the shoulder, for example.

A client came to me for a massage due to shoulder pain. When I saw the marks from cupping and leftover adhesive from tape on her shoulder blade, I was surprised. Both cupping and taping had been done properly, according to all the guidelines.

However, they were only treating the pathway of the pain, not the actual root cause of the discomfort. As a result, the shoulder pain persisted, and no improvement was made, except for some temporary improvements in local circulation where the cupping and tape were applied. This didn’t address the underlying issue and didn’t reduce the pain in the shoulder.

This poor client had been suffering for an entire year. But after just one session with us, the pain disappeared completely and didn’t come back for the next three days. Of course, it's impossible to treat a problem entirely in just one session. She came to us more times, but even after three sessions, the pain was reduced by 70%.

In her own words: 'After many sessions with three physiotherapists and one osteo, my shoulder pain was not improving. After three sessions with Alexander at Energy Flow, the pain is reduced by 70%. He works on every muscle inch by inch, and feels which muscle is weak and works to improve it.'

So, what happened?

This client had a sedentary lifestyle, didn’t exercise, and was constantly stressed from long hours at the computer. As a result, certain muscles were spasming while others were overstretched and damaged. All of this was reflecting on her overall well-being, especially in her shoulder. The shoulder is one of the most complex parts of our body when it comes to mobility and range of motion. There are many muscle groups involved, from the spine all the way to the shoulder, both front and back, from the middle of the chest all the way to the shoulder.

In this case, the key was identifying where the real issue was. By breaking down the muscles, like reading a book page by page, we were able to find the root cause of the pain and all the related complications that could make it worse.

The thing is, if a muscle isn’t working properly, other muscles around it will start taking over to compensate for the lack of function.

Why does this happen?

The answer is simple: each muscle has a specific function, and when one stops working properly, our subconscious activates other nearby muscles to maintain balance in the body.

At this point, you might think nothing major has happened, and it’s just some soreness somewhere. But this isn’t the case. When something starts hurting, it’s already a warning sign that something is wrong with your body. And it’s important to pay attention to it right away.

Why is this urgency so important?

Because if you ignore it and get used to the pain, your whole body starts to function incorrectly. Other muscles and even organs begin to take on unnatural loads. The worst part is that, when the root cause is finally dealt with, other muscles may have developed a habit of working improperly. In many cases, once the primary issue is resolved, you need to retrain the muscles to get back to their proper function.

As you can see, this is a complex issue, and the earlier you address it with an experienced massage therapist, the faster the root cause will be identified and resolved, leading to better overall health.

So, take care of your body, and don’t let small problems turn into bigger ones.
